ADVANCED FUSING TECHNIQUES: PATTERN BARS, SUSHI PLATES & ROLL-UPS TOO!
Patty Gray and Master Glassblower Ryan Staub $850 + $100 material fee (non-refundable)
September 8-12, Thur-Mon (10am-5pm)
In this intensive 5-day fast paced workshop students will build upon their design and composition skills as they work toward the completion of their final pieces. Teamwork and group dynamics will be a large part of the class and students will collaborate on the production of decorative elements. We will be designing panels that can be made into roll-ups, sushi plates, wall hangings, etc. This course will focus on developing strong design processes, (pattern bars, pattern bar slabs, high fire, combings, etc.) which can be incorporated into sushi plates, bowls, etc. We will also create a triptych (3-piece panels) as well as bowls and plates. By exploring fundamental principles of design and new techniques, each student will transform his/her vision into a rich composition. Patty and her assistants will excite your imagination with ideas, demonstrations and information on various fusing and kiln-forming techniques that can then be applied to your individual projects. There will be lots of “hands-on” projects focusing on developing new ideas and designs with techniques and methods learned in the class. We will explore techniques to create depth and surface design elements using frits, powders, stringers, powder wafers, metals, mica powders, irids and dichroic glass. This class will be of interest to those wanting to create thick pieces. We will work on “open faced” castings using the new “casting plates”. Using dams to control thickness of the glass will be taught as well. Students will have the opportunity to use the tile saws, horizontal lap wheels, diamond hand pads, and other cold working equipment allowing us to cut and assemble our designed projects. One roll-up will be included in the price of this class, but you can make arrangements for more during the class.
