Offhand Flameworked Glass

Suellen Fowler $450 + $50 material fee (non-refundable)
MARCH 26-28, Fri-Sun (10am - 5pm)
This class will expose the students to a method of flameworking developed by the late John Burton. It adapts an off-hand blowing style by using the end of a piece of glass tubing as a blowpipe, allowing the student to create vessels with intricate surface decoration and colors. Color work will include demonstrations of “flame striking” heat reactive colors, to achieve unusual hues that cannot be attained by re-striking in a kiln. The class will also learn how to hand mix colored rod, using oxide formulas developed by the Suellen. She will also demonstrate solid sculpting techniques, concentrating on fine detail work. The sculptures will range from free standing naturalistic creatures, to sculpted stoppers, fitted to a variety of “sculpture bottles”.
Beginners are welcome, but some experience on the torch is recommended.
