The Eugene Glass School, Oregons newest glass art academy,
offers an exciting 2005 course schedule and curriculum. With
our 10,000 square foot facility, customized studio classrooms,
and expert instructors, were eager to share our unique approach
to learning and progressive glassblowing. The art of glass
is exciting and addictive. Like any art form it requires a
combination of physical skill, mental ability, and creative
vision. Add 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit of flame and fury to
that equation and what you have is an art form that is as
intriguing as it is challenging. In the past few years, glass
art has emerged like never before - from local communities
to leading international art houses. Now that the commercial
art world has officially embraced this age-old discipline,
the need for structured education has never been greater.
MISSION The
mission of the Eugene Glass School is to promote individual
and artistic growth in art and craft, and to increase awareness
and appreciation of glass in the larger community and society.
In carrying out its mission, the
Eugene Glass School will provide educational opportunities
and creative expression and exploration of the art glass medium
to emerging and professional artists as well as beginning
students, educators and collectors in the Eugene/Springfield
area, the state of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.

Our students learn from professional glass artists while they
experience the wonder of glass first hand. Do you enjoy the
luxury of working in a relaxed environment with a low teacher-to-student
ratio? Are you a hands-on learner? Do you value individual
instruction? If the answer is yes, then welcome! In our classes
youll gain basic skills quickly while you set your own education
objectives. From the creation of simple glass beads or paperweights,
to complex sculptures, before you know it, youll be creating
your own masterpiece!
Students can expect to develop new perspectives and shape
their awareness of form, color application and aesthetic design.
All students receive individual assistance and detailed instruction
on the technical aspects of executing designs, along with
the opportunity to engage in valuable discussions with instructors
and other artists. Students learn a system of principles and
methods employed in the conception and execution of high-quality
art objects. By study, practice, and observation students
learn to exercise their intuitive faculties in order to apply
their lessons to personal projects.
The Eugene Glass School's (EGS) 10,000 square-foot facility, located in the
so-called "glassblowing capitol of the world" - Eugene, Oregon - was
designed and customized by sixth-generation glassblowers Karl and Hans
Ittig. These German experts spent months preparing and installing our unique
studio classrooms with the help of Josch Borz, German furnace expert, who
constructed our new custom glass furnace and Vince Thomas of Northwest Iron
Works who assisted Mr. Borz through the process of completing the hot shop.
As Mr. Borz and Mr. Thomas completed the long-awaited construction of our
hot shop, Bob DeBeradinis of MDH Construction completed a series of lengthy
city inspections. Included in the final inspection was a private
demonstration session with all county inspectors, including the Chief Fire
Inspector. The Eugene Glass School staff is pleased to announce that all
permits are in place and we are ready to go!
Our fusing shop has many features, including a new furnace
with a heat re-cooperation system that preheats incoming air
with the exhaust from the furnace, allowing for a very comfortable
working environment during our frequently chilly Eugene weather.
We also have a huge selection of color and two new Taurus
ring saws (kindly donated by Gemini). Our fusing shop has
evolved dramatically, as well as the students and staff that
have been involved with it. The artwork being produced in
the classes is incredible. Feel free to drop by the school
to find out whats new in our fusing studio.
Although our new facility is quite large, classes are filling
fast. To ensure your spot in upcoming courses, new students
should enroll at the earliest available opportunity.
Each class offers its students all necessary tools and supplies
to fulfill class requirements. (Raw materials are purchased
based on individual student needs.) The quantity and choice
of art supplies vary according to each class. Most basic supplies
are provided for introductory, experimental, or demonstration
purposes. Glass Alchemy has kindly donated an abundance of
new colors to EGS and to Mike Plane for use in our flame shop.
Paul Trautman of Northstar Glass also contributed lots of
color for Robert Mickelsons May sculpture class, and there
is plenty left over for our next session of classes. Local
glass supply retailers, Winship Designs, Georgies Ceramics,
and Art of Glass have all been more than supportive by giving
discounts to students and members of EGS. Additional supplies
are available at our school store. If students are expected
to bring specific materials or tools, a list will be provided
with student registration confirmation.
STUDIO RENTAL
EGS Membership offers you the opportunity to rent shop time
at drastically reduced rates! Three of our studios are now
available for rent to Members and the general public. Including
one of the only hot shops available for rent in the state
of Oregon, our shared studio areas create a stimulating environment
for resident and visiting artists to collaborate with fellow
glass artists. By sharing ideas and concepts and collaborating
on artistic creations, the open structure of our facility
was designed to offer a fertile learning environment for all.
In addition, we frequently host artists who arrive from all
over the Pacific Northwest and beyond, to attend our workshops
and rent studio space for their personal projects. Follow
this link for further details and shop rental rates!
