Kathleen Mitchell

Kathleen began working in glass in 1981, inspired by images of Paul Marionis work. At Pilchuck in the early 80s she fused, slumped and cold fabricated with Michael Cohn and Molly Stone and worked in casting and sculpture with British artist, Clifford Rainey. In addition, those summers at Pilchuck provided inspiration and exposure to Artists in Residence such as Italo Scanga and Bertil Vallien. In 1984 she learned to blow glass with Henry Halem at Kent State. The frozen water pipes of a single winter in Ohio drove her back to southern California where she currently produces her furnace work at Fat Baby Glass in the UCSD Crafts Center and McQuade Art Glass in Encinitas (the Hot Tomatoes). While passionate about blown glass, she developed an additional love of lampworking which led to building her own studio DCR HotGlass. In partnership with Teresa Soito, they produce unique jewelry with their handmade beads and icons. Kathleen is an instructor of lampworking at UCSD Crafts Center, La Jolla, California as well as a teaching assistant in the hot shop.
